Hi guys! Happy Friday! This week was a busy not to mention hot week! Last week my friend Hollie asked if my boys and I could help her with their annual kids camp at the Valley Nature Center in Weslaco, TX. We were glad to help as it was a very special week for kids with Autism. The VNC takes several weeks out of the Summer to host several kid’s camp and this was one of them. Many of the children are sponsored by donations from our benefactors.
The VNC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide knowledge and understanding of our environment to children and adults of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. It is a unique natural community of plant, bugs, birds and animals that occupy six acres with a mile of interpretive trails. There is a recreated Tamaulipas thorn-scrub forest and it has an extensive collection of South Texas native plants. The VNC hosts many programs including kid’s summer camps, school field trips, birding classes, nature park tours, wildlife art and photo displays, guided tours and more.
If you have not had an opportunity to visit VNC, anytime is a good time! It is open Tuesday-Friday from 9AM-5PM, Saturday 8AM-5PM and Sunday 1PM-5PM. The admission fee for children 12 and under is $2.00, for those over 13 it is $5.00, and for senior citizens is $3.00. The admission fee helps provide resources that are used to help keep this wonderful place running. You can find the times and admission fee here. It is the perfect spot to take your little ones, or yourself, and learn about what the VNC has to offer.
Have you already been to the VNC? If so what did you think of it? What did you like most about it? I think my favorite part is feeding the turtles and looking at the snakes. I can’t wait to take Everett when he is older!
